Cinnober Financial Technology, global supplier of financial IT, has just signed an exclusive sports agreement with the Umeå sports club UIK. The partnership entails the IT company supporting UIK’s work with youth and elite women’s football. In return, the club will contribute with its valuable experience from leadership and successful team building.
“It’s fantastic that we can be a part of realizing these young women’s dreams and at the same time, take part in the club’s ambitious efforts,” says Cinnober’s CEO Veronica Augustsson. “The new partnership will benefit both parties because there is a strong and natural link between elite sport and business. I believe that companies have a lot to gain by applying the way sports embraces things full-on, its long-term perspective and clear goals.”
The exchange between Cinnober and Umeå IK will be led by Joakim Blomqvist, certified psychologist and previously head trainer at the club, who now conducts training courses for businesses on leadership and sports psychology.
Umeå IK prioritizes both its broad youth operations and its more elite-focused efforts. The club has had many sports successes this year alone. It has been playing in the Swedish women’s football games since 1996, and during 2000-2008, took home no less than seven gold medals from the Swedish National Championships. In addition, the club also won the Champions League in 2003 and 2004.After years of investing in building a young and strong A-team, UIK is now ready to venture into deeper waters.
“We are really looking forward to this new sponsorship, which will no doubt be inspiring and enriching for both parties,” comments UIK’s Manager Niklas Westman. “Cinnober is an exciting IT company that really wants to have an active role in the club’s development.”
The partnership with UIK means that Cinnober is further strengthening its ties to Umeå. Established in 1998, the company has its headquarters in Stockholm and, for the past few years, an office in Umeå with about 50 employees. With close to 30 nationalities represented in the company, diversity is highly prioritized. Young women are encouraged to take on technology-focused education, and beginning last year, the company has been running trainee courses at the Umeå office.
Cinnober’s large-scale investments in the region have also resulted in in-depth discussions with businesses, government authorities and universities about building a future IT cluster here. And more concretely, on developing on a new, unique focus area on financial IT at Umeå University – a course that will be starting up this summer.
